RATS Technical Sessions - CAL Mar 2025

  • RATS - Rotating and Turbomachinery Society 341 10 Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB, T2R 0A5 Canada (map)

TOPIC:

Laser Weld Technology Applied to Turbomachinery Repairs

  • Bill has been in the turbomachinery industry for nine years and an engineer for 13 years.  The last 6 years with MAN as a Repair Engineer has included applications of laser welding becoming MAN’s regional expert on the topic.  He graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineer from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2012.  Additionally, he holds a Professional Engineering license in the state of Texas

DESCRIPTION:

Laser welding is a repair method in which a precision laser is used for maintenance and repair of rotors, impellers, and stationary components suffering from wear and corrosion. The technology was first implemented in 2008 by MAN Energy Solutions at our factory in Germany as a superior repair technique over the traditional welding and thermal spray methods.  We now have that capability in the Houston area, and will present some details about the technology, and applications.
